One Direction surprise-released their new single “Drag Me Down” Friday morning, the boy band’s first single following Zayn Malik’s departure.
The pop-rock track shifts this guitar rock band’s sound through the softer folk of these last album, Four, time for the more upbeat, electronic heavy elements in their first two albums. “It’s the 1st song in the new album that were working very, very, very difficult on,” member Liam Payne said in the video the group posted on Twitter following tune’s release. “We can’t loose time waiting for you to see it.”

The track happens the heels of former member Malik’s announcement which he had signed a solo contract to RCA Records. Right before tweeting a picture of himself signing the contract looking at a RCA sign, Malik confirmed which the launch of his solo career means that he had left the group. “I guess I never explained why I left,” he wrote. “It was due to this moment obtain the opportunity to explain to you who I really am!” He ended his tweet while using hashtag “#realmusic.”
Malik quit this guitar rock band less than a week after exiting the tour caused by “stress” last March. For most of year, One Direction happen to be touring the entire world in support of Four, beginning the North American leg during the early July with support from “I Love It” duo Icona Pop.
